Itinerary

Day 1 Cusco - Ollantaytambo - 82km (trailhead)

n the early morning, we will pick you up from your hotel and begin our journey by bus toward the starting point at kilometer 82, located in the heart of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Our trek starts by crossing the Urubamba River, following the path of the Inca Trail along the river’s left side.

As we pass through indigenous farmlands, we’ll gain insight into the wide variety of crops cultivated in the region. The trail leads us to the archaeological sites of Wilkarakay and Llactapata, where we’ll have the chance to admire the majestic snow-capped Wakay Willka (5850 meters), revered by locals as the “Sacred Tears of Fertility.”

The hike continues through the scenic Cusichaka River Canyon, offering stunning views of the Eastern Andes (Cordillera Oriental). As the day unfolds, we’ll walk across varied terrains and changing altitudes, witnessing an incredible diversity of Andean ecosystems.

We’ll end the day by setting up camp at Llulluchapampa, where we’ll spend the night surrounded by the peaceful beauty of the mountains.

After enjoying a hearty breakfast, we prepare ourselves for the most demanding segment of our journey: the ascent to the famous Dead Woman’s Pass, or Warmiwañuska. This challenging stretch tests both endurance and determination. Along the way, we’ll pass through a high-altitude Qeuña forest—home to the rare Polylepis trees, among the highest-growing trees on Earth and sadly threatened by extinction.

Once we reach the summit, we’re rewarded with sweeping views of the surrounding Andes, a breathtaking payoff for our efforts. We then begin a steady descent into the Pacaymayu Alto valley, where we’ll stop to enjoy lunch in the midst of striking mountain scenery. Keep your eyes on the sky—this is a prime spot to catch a glimpse of the majestic Andean condor soaring above.

With renewed energy, we press on toward the Runkurakay ruins, climbing gradually past the peaceful Yanacocha Lake, before arriving at the day’s second mountain pass at 3,680 meters.

Our afternoon descent leads us to the remarkable Sayacmarca archaeological site. From there, the trail carries us to our campsite in Chaquicocha, where the peaceful sounds of birdsong and the calm of the Andean wilderness will accompany us into the evening.

Awakened by a symphony of birdcalls, a hearty breakfast awaits you. As we journey towards the Wyñay Wayna campsite, the trail unveils the lush expanse of the cloud forest. Here, a myriad of exotic birds like the Andean Guan, Gray-Breasted Mountain Toucan, and Red Crested Cotinga accompany our trek, filling the air with their harmonious notes.

All the while, the picturesque backdrop of the Cordillera Oriental unfolds, boasting awe-inspiring snow-peaks like Salkantay, Humantay, and Pumasillo, each standing tall at 6,271m, 5,735m, and 5,686m respectively.

Before reaching our campsite, we’ll meander through the ancient Inca ruins of Phuyutamarca, taking a moment to absorb its rich history. As we settle into our campsite at Wyñay Wayna, the setting sun casts a golden hue over the Urubamba River, creating a mesmerizing tableau against the intricate Andean Terraces of this significant Inca landmark.

Starting our day with a pre-dawn breakfast, we’ll cover the final 5 kilometers of the Inca Trail, ensuring we reach the Sun Gate just in time for the sunrise. From this vantage point, the majestic sanctuary of Machu Picchu unfolds before our eyes, bathed in the first light of day.

As we make our way down to the main entrance, a brief halt at a strategic lookout allows your guide to share insightful details about this iconic Inca landmark.

Within Machu Picchu, there’s ample time to wander and absorb its splendor. Those feeling adventurous can ascend Wayna Picchu or delve into the mysteries of the Moon Temple. After a day steeped in history and wonder, we’ll descend to Aguas Calientes, where a train awaits to whisk us back to Cusco.
