Day 1 Cusco – Soraypampa – Wayracmachay
We begin our adventure early in the morning with a private 2.5-hour drive from Cusco, stopping for breakfast in the town of Mollepata. After the meal, we continue by vehicle for another two hours until we reach the starting point of the trek at Soraypampa. Here, following a short orientation, we’re welcomed by the awe-inspiring snow-capped Umantay Mountain, rising to 5,700 meters, surrounded by rugged Andean scenery.
Our hike starts gently through a scenic alpine valley leading to Salkantaypampa. From there, the trail climbs more steeply with a series of switchbacks, gradually bringing into full view the magnificent Salkantay Mountain—a constant and majestic presence. Around midday, we stop for lunch beside the tranquil Soirococha Lake at 4,400 meters. After roughly four hours of hiking, we reach the trek’s highest point: the Salkantay Pass at 4,600 meters.
From this high vantage point, the sacred Salkantay peak dominates the horizon. Reaching this elevation is a milestone for trekkers, who often leave a stone offering on the mountain as a sign of gratitude to the Apus, the spirits of the Andes.
The trail then descends into a vast glacial valley rich in wildlife. Keep an eye out for native species like chinchillas, Andean gulls, the cara cara falcon, and—if lucky—the mighty Andean condor, the largest flying bird in the world. We finish the day at our campsite in Wayracmachay, located at 3,700 meters and surrounded by panoramic mountain views.
Day 2 Wayracmachay – La Playa
This morning, we say goodbye to the pyramid-shaped Salkantay peak and begin our descent into the cloud forest. As the altitude drops, the landscape transforms into lush rainforest, alive with orchids, bromeliads, and vibrant native birds. Towering bamboo groves line our path, offering occasional views back to the snowy peaks behind us.
Following the river that cuts through the valley, we hike through increasingly dense vegetation. The trail reveals untouched spots bursting with strawberries, hanging passion fruit, and a variety of orchids and begonias. We take a break for lunch in the village of Colpapampa.
After lunch, we continue through rich woodlands and farmland, passing by unique high-altitude crops. As we descend, the air warms and the flora changes—soon we find ourselves surrounded by banana trees, avocado plants, and coffee farms. By late afternoon, we arrive at our campsite in La Playa (1,900 meters).
In the evening, you’ll have time to explore the nearby organic coffee plantations or simply relax and enjoy the calm atmosphere, preparing for the next day’s highlights—including views of Machu Picchu from the ancient Inca site of Llactapata.
Day 3 La Playa – Llactapata – Hidroelectrica – Aguas Calientes
We begin the day early, ascending an original Inca trail that offers sweeping views of the surrounding valleys and mountains. After around three hours of hiking, we arrive at the Incan ruins of Llactapata, where we pause to take in a rare and spectacular view of Machu Picchu from across the valley—a sight few travelers ever witness.
We then continue into the dense jungle, where the trail winds through lush vegetation and echoing bird calls. Along the way, we pass an impressive man-made waterfall before reaching our lunch spot near the hydroelectric station.
For the final stretch, we walk along the train tracks beside the Urubamba River, which guides us to the town of Aguas Calientes, at the foot of Machu Picchu. We spend the night in a cozy hostel, resting up for the grand finale of our journey.
Day 4 Machu Picchu – Cusco
We rise early to catch one of the first buses up to Machu Picchu, aiming to experience the mystical site in the golden light of dawn. Upon arrival, we’ll embark on a guided tour of the citadel, visiting its most iconic sectors and learning the stories behind its incredible architecture.
After the tour, you’ll have free time to continue exploring the site on your own. Once ready, we take the bus back to Aguas Calientes, where we board a train to Ollantaytambo. From there, a bus will return us to Cusco, arriving in the evening—concluding an unforgettable journey through the Andes.
